Do I Really Need a Public Adjuster? An Honest Answer

Public adjusting  ·  Minnesota policyholders

I’ll be straight with you: not every claim needs a public adjuster. If your insurance company is treating you fairly, the damage is minor, and the process is moving smoothly, you may not need us. But here’s how to think about it honestly — and when hiring one actually makes a meaningful difference.

When you probably don’t need a PA

A public adjuster likely isn’t necessary if:

  • The damage is minor and the claim is straightforward
  • Your insurer is communicating clearly and the process is moving
  • The settlement offer covers the full cost of repair based on legitimate contractor estimates
  • You have a simple claim with no complexity or dispute

When you almost certainly do

The calculus changes significantly in these situations:

Large or complex claims. Fire, major water damage, significant structural damage, or business losses involve dozens of line items and require detailed documentation. The more complex the claim, the more room there is for an insurer to undervalue it — and the more a public adjuster can do.

Denied claims. If your claim has been denied, don’t accept that as the final word. A public adjuster can review the denial, identify weaknesses in the insurer’s position, and reopen or supplement the claim.

Underpaid claims. If you received a check but contractors are telling you it won’t cover the repairs, that gap is real — and it’s worth having a professional review the settlement.

When you don’t have time. Managing an insurance claim is a part-time job. Dealing with adjusters, contractors, documentation, and follow-up takes hours you may not have. A public adjuster handles all of it.

When the stakes are high. If the difference between a fair settlement and what you’ve been offered is significant, the cost of a public adjuster — a percentage of your settlement — is almost always worth it.

The risk of not having one

The insurance company has trained professionals on their side. Their adjuster knows the policy language, knows what to look for, and knows what to leave out. Most policyholders go into that process without any comparable expertise — and the settlement reflects it.

I’m not saying insurers are always acting in bad faith. But the system is designed in their favor. A public adjuster levels the playing field.
